After back-to-back days of 3% declines, I understand why most investors are nervous about their portfolios. Add in the constant headlines regarding the coronavirus and the fear spikes even higher. That鈥檚 what we need to talk about today. I want to insert some logic and perspective into the current frenzy. Let鈥檚 start with the stock market. The S&P 500 began today down 7.6% from its all-time closing high last Wednesday. When stocks fall sharply in such a short amount of time, it tends to feel much worse than if they slid that same amount over a few months. Unfortunately, in the connected and instant information world we live in today, pullbacks are often violent and fast. But鈥� stocks can rebound just as quickly. They usually do.

It鈥檚 not every morning you wake up and read about a scientific discovery that could be an absolute game-changer for both humanity and investors who get in ahead of the trend. I almost couldn鈥檛 believe my eyes when I saw it yesterday. Researchers at MIT have used artificial intelligence (AI) in the form of neural networks to identify a powerful new antibiotic compound. The drug could be a game-changer because it has the potential to tackle treatment-resistant bacteria strands that current drugs are helpless against. This scourge of treatment-resistant bacteria has been worrying health officials for decades.

I鈥檓 an early riser. I get up before the sun every morning, in part because I can鈥檛 wait to get the day started. I鈥檓 often the first one in the office, although my CEO and I have a bit of a competition going. The first thing I do every morning is check the headlines. I get up to speed on what happened overnight in foreign markets, and corporate announcements often come early in the morning. It鈥檚 earnings season here in the market. That may sound boring to some of you 鈥� and I get it. But today, earnings season gave us some exciting news. The world鈥檚 largest cannabis company reported much better-than-expected earnings this morning. The stock opened 20% higher, and the positive sentiment spread throughout the industry. This is extremely encouraging action, as the sector benchmark ETFMG Alternative Harvest ETF (MJ) had been trading near a bottom and is now bouncing nicely off it. Could this be the trigger to reignite the next major rally in cannabis stocks? These earnings are so darn good that I think it might be鈥�

鈥淚nvest in what you know.鈥� It鈥檚 one of the nuggets of wisdom passed down from investing legend Peter Lynch. Lynch was one of the most successful investors of the modern era. He ran the Magellan Fund at Fidelity for 13 years and was so successful that he retired in 1990 at the ripe old age of 46. As an investor who not only scours the numbers and charts, but also takes the time to do the important boots-on-the-ground research, investing in what I know is a motto I take to heart. Every investor should use their eyes and ears to figure out what鈥檚 trending and what鈥檚 hot as a starting point for finding potential investment winners. I was reminded of Lynch鈥檚 words while watching the commercials during the Super Bowl.

I can鈥檛 wait for what鈥檚 to come here in the Roaring 2020s. I fully expect to look back at this decade as one of the largest wealth-creation opportunities of our lifetimes. And much of those gains will go to those of us who invest like venture capitalists.
