For instance, twice in bitcoin鈥檚 (BTC) history a preprogrammed event has taken place that caused its price to soar into the stratosphere. I explained what this event, known as 鈥渢he halvening,鈥� is all about in last Thursday鈥檚 MoneyWire. Basically, after bitcoin undergoes a halvening, the market receives half of the daily supply of new bitcoins. If demand holds up 鈥� and it will 鈥� prices rise. It鈥檚 simple supply and demand economics. In the months that followed the first halvening in November 2012, the bitcoin price rose 2,135%.

Back in November 2012, a change took place to the way bitcoin (BTC) rewards miners for creating new bitcoin and securing the network. We talked about this hugely significant event in yesterday鈥檚 MoneyWire. It鈥檚 called 鈥渢he halvening鈥� among industry insiders and happens every few years with bitcoin. It is written into the cryptocurrency鈥檚 鈥淒NA鈥� if you will 鈥� or its code base. Essentially, the supply of bitcoin dropped and the demand for it kept chugging along. In the months that followed, bitcoin鈥檚 price soared an amazing 2,135%, bringing a spectacular windfall to early investors who saw the halvening and its implications coming well ahead of time.

Every great investment needs something to drive it higher 鈥� a catalyst. A catalyst can be general, like a mega-trend that will grow massively over the years. It can also be something specific, like a new breakthrough product, changing laws, or a drug approval. It鈥檚 rare that you can put a huge catalyst on the calendar. Well, it鈥檚 time to start planning. We鈥檙e gearing up for a known event that鈥檚 going to affect the cryptocurrency market in a big way. And it presents us with an opportunity too incredible to ignore. This isn鈥檛 a question of 鈥渋f鈥� or 鈥渨hen.鈥� We know it鈥檚 happening. We know when. And we know how much money investors made when it鈥檚 happened before.

It鈥檚 that time of year again鈥� predictions time! Predictions are fun, but they are also important. As someone who invests in the hypergrowth trends of the future, I鈥檓 always looking ahead at what鈥檚 to come. But with the economy still so strong 鈥� including the lowest unemployment in 50 years! 鈥� they鈥檝e had to change their story. Now, Barron鈥檚 is speculating that stocks will be roughly flat next year. That鈥檚 right鈥� as of Monday, Barron鈥檚 2020 Outlook is for the S&P 500 to gain just 4%. That鈥檚 low enough to make some folks nervous about their retirement. But remember, you鈥檝e got to take these things with a grain of salt. Fear sells, and the media need to attract eyeballs for their advertisers.

Is all press good press? If you ask Lululemon (LULU), it would answer 鈥� yes. Back in March 2013, the athleisure apparel company got hit with some unfortunate headlines. The company鈥檚 iconic leggings were a little too transparent鈥� and it led to lawsuits and a sell-off in the stock. Recent IPO darling Peloton (PTON) is running into a similar issue with its now infamous Christmas commercial. The company鈥檚 stock has lost $1.5 billion in market value after overly sensitive viewers and some in the media took offense to the ad. In this week鈥檚 podcast, I delve into the controversy.
